President's Message

  • 04 Jan 2024 2:28 PM | Patti March (Administrator)

I am honored to serve as the 2024 President of the Albuquerque Sales & Economic Growth Association (ASEGA). I am immensely proud to serve on the 2024 Executive Board with Past President Mike Zimmer; President Elect and Board Liaison Katie Uilk; Strategic Planning Director Dean Johnson; Sergeant at Arms Luke Saiz; Secretary/Treasurer Karen Martinez; Board of Directors:  Miriam Freeman, Oscar Huber, Deanna Mathis.

I have been a member of ASEGA since 2020. I was accepted into ASEGA just prior to COVID impacting our community. I was able to witness over forty-five business owners pivot and support each other to survive the impact of COVID on the State of New Mexico through shutdowns. I sat on the executive board in 2023 as the President Elect. One of the biggest accomplishments of 2023 was the development of Strategic Planning project for the future of ASEGA. Dean Johnson initiated this accomplishment. Through the Strategic Planning process, five focus groups (Strategic Planning, Membership, Technology/Marketing, Location, Event Planning) were developed to ensure the perpetuity of ASEGA for many, many years to come. Members were quick to sign up for the focus groups because WE believe in the impact and success of ASEGA.

The purpose of the Albuquerque Sales & Economic Growth Association is the joint, common interest of promoting small businesses in Central New Mexico through making members aware of local, county, state, and federal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, and proposed laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations that affect small businesses.

ASEGA is among the oldest, largest, and most active business groups in the Albuquerque area. I have found that ASEGA has been THE most beneficial and successful group I have ever participated in for business owners and business success. The membership wants each other to thrive in their respective industries. ASEGA is a very tight knit group. We genuinely care about each other like an extended family. We also have outside quarterly events for ASEGA members and their families.

At each of our weekly Wednesday lunch meetings (1130am-1pm), the membership presents business advisories and other information of value to the membership. The membership prides itself on keeping each other informed about numerous topics:  crime prevention, economic development, changing laws/ordinances, job training programs, legislative updates, and so much more. We keep each other informed of businesses coming into and leaving the area. When we can provide a business advisory from our Association to another member of the Association, we are confident in making the advisory because we have taken time to get to know the high-quality member and their business. We support and help each other thrive in challenging times. Occasionally, we have guest speakers that add value by educating us on legislative updates, changing economic climate, training opportunities, and more. We also require our members to give a presentation on their own business regarding laws and regulations, proposed laws and regulations, and any other items affecting their operation, products, or services of his/her business at least once per year. Members are also required to provide an industry update at least twice per year on their own industry. We are always seeking locally owned, small business owners to increase the membership of ASEGA.

One of my all-time favorite sayings is “When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has passed” by William Bennett (1975). I have used this quote as motivation to always be as prepared as possible whether it is for today or the future.

ASEGA would not be where it is today, if it were not for the Executive Director, Veronica Kemper. She schedules weekly meetings, monthly executive board meetings, manages the financial reports diligently, and ensures ASEGA consistently runs efficiently and effectively. Veronica Kemper is the backbone of ASEGA and its success.

I am looking forward to a remarkably successful 2024 with some of the greatest business owners in the State of New Mexico.

My name is Shelly Swope. I am a sales & design consultant for Accent Southwest Windows & Doors. I have been a member of Albuquerque Sales and Economic Growth Association for almost eight years and a member of the Board of Directors for the last three years. I am excited to be President of ASEGA for the year 2023. ASEGA is the first and only networking group I have belonged to. I had no idea eight years ago that the members of ASEGA would become like family. I look forward to seeing everyone each week. We are a loyal tight knit community. We meet weekly at either Mario’s on 4th Street or Tomasita’s on Pan American Freeway. We do business with each other, refer each other to our friends and family, and share our business knowledge. We get to know each other even more outside of weekly meetings at quarterly events like Isotopes baseball games, themed dinner parties, and picnics in the mountains. I am looking forward to the year!

I am proud to serve the Albuquerque Sales and Economic Growth Association as President in 2018!  ASEGA is among the oldest, largest, and most active of the business groups in the Albuquerque area.  The key to our long term success is quite simple – it is the membership.  We benefit from a great mix of long term (some over 30 years) and newer members.  We have representatives of all types of businesses that bring many unique and diverse perspectives to our community.

We meet every week for lunch as a group.  We focus at these weekly meetings on educating our members on topics of general interest to local business.  The majority of the time, these meetings include sharing information within the group by other group members.  Occasionally, we bring in outside experts to speak to us on non-political topics of interest such as job training programs available through the State of NM, local crime prevention, economic development activities, and others.

We are governed by a group of volunteer Officers and a Board of Directors elected from our membership.  Please see the membership tab on our website for the current membership, Officers, and Directors.  I know you will be impressed by the high quality businesses and businesspeople who are active in our organization.

Keith Ferrazzi said, “Poverty, I realized, wasn’t only lack of financial resources; it was isolation from the kind of people who could help you make more of yourself.”

I cordially invite you to explore our organization by joining us from 11:45 am to 1 pm Wednesday at Sadie’s of NM on 4th St NW for a great lunch and even better experience to help you make more of yourself and your business!

    Your 2018 ASEGA President,

    Greg Steen

I am so honored to serve the Albuquerque Sales and Economic Growth Association as your 2017 President.  I have been a member of this organization since 2009 and found it to be the best business organization in Albuquerque, if not the State of New Mexico.  This organization exemplifies the best of business owners and principals of Albuquerque.  Each member has a vested interest in improving the business climate of Albuquerque, along with sharing their expertise in their respective business industries.

I hope that I can live up to the expectations of the membership as your 2017 President.  Former past President's of this organization have left solid foundation for the future of this organization. To say the least I have large shoes to fill.  I am also very honored to have the cream of the crop in Albuquerque to serve on the 2017 Board of Directors.  I would like to acknowledge them and thank them for their service to our organization.  President Elect Greg Steen with Pop-A-Lock of Albuquerque, Past President Eric Maxon with Steward’s Plumbing, Jenifer Ghion Secretary/Treasurer with BDC Door Company, Chad Casey Sergeant at Arms with Mr. Electric of Albuquerque, Directors Oscar Huber with Contemporary Classic Design, CJ Johnson with Pinon Deer Computers, Marty Mayo with TAS Security Systems, Luke Saiz with Anywhere You Need To Eat Catering.  Much of the  success of this organization also rests in the very capable hands of our Executive Secretary Veronica Miner.  She organizes the weekly meetings and monthly board meetings so that the meetings run efficiently.  With the hard work of this board and our executive secretary we will accomplish many great things in 2017.

Stayed tuned we have many exciting events coming up the next few months.

Your 2017 President Julie Kirkpatrick with Auto Glass Services

Welcome to ASEGA, New Mexico’s finest business league dedicated to the improvement and meeting the needs of our local small business community.  Our members typically are owners or principals of small businesses engaged in a wide variety of sales, goods, and services.  ASEGA members meet for lunch each Wednesday at Sadie’s on Fourth Street in Albuquerque.  During these gatherings, members are treated to a 10-minute presentation from another member about his or her business and any recent developments that may affect the business or other related small businesses.  We also hear a short business category update from another member about any recent changes in regulation or technology that have had an impact on that business.  The meetings also are an opportunity to socialize and get to know others who may be facing the same issues or challenges that confront small business owners on a regular basis.  As one member said, “If nothing else, it’s a chance to eat lunch with a bunch of really nice people.”  Please contact our executive secretary for additional information regarding membership.
